National Conference: Delegates Demand Full Autonomy For The Judiciary

The support became clear during debates on the committee’s report at Monday’s plenary.
The judiciary committee at the national conference is pushing for a constitutional review that will see the judiciary arm of government funded directly from the federation account.
The committee acknowledged that the judiciary is fast losing its credibility owing to several challenges. The committee led by Retired Justice G.A. Oguntade proposed a number of reforms aimed at restoring the dignity of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
The proposed reforms if implemented will see the judiciary being funded from the consolidated revenue fund, which will guarantee the independence of the judiciary and isolate it from manipulative tendencies of other arms of government.
Chibudom Nwuche, said, “It is important that the judiciary has autonomy from all the arms of government so they can dispense justice without fear or favour. So I support the recommendation that they should be independent and that their money should be in the first line charge of the federation account.”
Shem Nuhu, said, “This provision that has been made if carried, will surely ensure that the judiciary will speak without any fear or favour, not minding whose ox is going to be gored.
Another recommendation which evoked several comments during debates on the committee’s report is the proposal for the establishment of a separate office for the Attorney General both at the federal and state level.
Adefemi Kila, said, “The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Justice of the Federation should be separated. One is totally professional, the other one is political.”
The committee also recommended that if possible, the report of the National Conference should be taken to the court of public opinion through a referendum.
