The Governor who spoke at the first convocation and twelfth anniversary of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, said the two qualities are necessary for graduates to be drivers of the state and national economy. Governor Uduaghan mentioned anti-social activities such as cultism, armed robbery, rape and other vices as being capable of distracting students from concentrating on their studies. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Governor, Delta state, said, "For those who are currently here, there are some unpleasant reports that I am getting which is not acceptable. “Misbehaviour is not acceptable, cultism is not acceptable." Uduaghan urged Ogwashi-Uku people to take ownership of the institution by getting involved in the development of the polytechnic. Rector of the Delta state polytechnic, Edna Nneka Mogekwu, while thanking governor Uduaghan for his efforts in ensuring that the institution leaves up to expectation, explained that the 19,078 students drawn from 2004 to 2013 academic session were found worthy to graduate. Edna, said: "I wish to acknowledge the wonderful support we enjoy from the visitor to the polytechnic, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Delta state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan." The Recctor said the institution is facing several challenges in areas of road network, water, electricity, staff quarters and students’ hostel. Some of the graduands expressed their wishes and aspirations. A graduand, said: "I am so happy and excited because I Am graduate." Another graduand, said, "For the first time, this school is organizing this great occasion." The convocation also witnessed conferment of honorary fellowship award on six persons amongst whom was Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, father of the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
